What The Footnote Is

An independent publication with one reporter and a stated standard of proof. The byline is Matt Guerra.

Every claim carries a source tier, and the citation for it is a footnote rather than a hyperlink, so a reader can see the outlet and what it was cited for before deciding to leave the page. Where the record cannot answer a question, the question is published as open rather than closed with inference.

How the work is organized

The Open Record is the daily edition. It works through a day of reporting and marks what was documented against what was merely asserted.

Long-form work is organized into desks, each with its own index and its own pace. Investigations is the first of them and it will not be the last.

A documentary layer sits underneath all of it: the primary sources every claim resolves to. The first body of records worked through is the 2025 DOJ Epstein Files Transparency Act release, and the indexed version of it is withdrawn until it is ready.

What you can expect

Every claim traceable to a source, with the tier of that source stated rather than implied.

Citations carried in footnotes, each naming the outlet, the address, and an archived copy where one has been captured.

Argument labeled as argument, including this publication’s own.

Corrections logged publicly, sorted by whether they were mechanical, judgment calls, or substantive.

Method carries the full detail: what the research is drawn from, how sources are weighted, how citations resolve, and what the record does not show.

What you should not expect

This is not breaking news and does not try to be. It runs behind on purpose, because the distance between a claim and its evidence usually takes about that long to become visible.

It is not comprehensive. Every edition names what it could not reach, and every investigation states its own evidentiary gaps.

It is not neutral between accurate and inaccurate accounts. Attributing a claim is not the same as treating it as equally likely to be true.

Corrections are taken seriously and logged publicly whether or not they are flattering. If you find an error, send it with a source and it will be checked against the original reporting.
